Some wasps don't build their houses and don't make honeycombs. They are parasites of other animals. There are among them useful for people, but there are very few of them.

Wasps riders: a general description

Wasp riders.

Wasp rider and caterpillar.

Riders are a whole infraorder of small and microscopic insects that prefer to lead a parasitic lifestyle. Their name refers to how the animal infects its prey.

The main difference between riders and ordinary wasps is that instead of sting they have an ovipositor. They lay their eggs in the body of other animals that are prey. It can be:

  • arthropods;
  • caterpillars;
  • beetles;
  • insects.

Types of parasitic ichneumons

Wasp wasps or parasitic hymenoptera, which Wikipedia calls them, are in turn divided into several subspecies, depending on how they infect their hosts.

Ectoparasites. They prefer to settle outside the owners, who live secretly.
Endoparasites. Those that, with their ovipositor, lay larvae inside the hosts.
Superparasites. These are those that can infect other parasites with their larvae.

parasite parasites

A good example of a superparasitic wasp wasp is its larva in gall wasps. They lay their clutches in oak leaves, after which a gall is formed. The hazelnutworm is selected from the gall when it is ready for mating, and if a ichneumon larva enters it, then it dies there.

Types of wasps riders

There are more than a hundred thousand wasps of riders. But in the climatic conditions of the Russian Federation, not so much is common. They are quite rare, so a meeting with subspecies is practically not threatened.

Mutillids

Wasps with an attractive appearance and bright coloration. They parasitize other wasps, bees and flies.

Mimarommatids

The most tenacious species of wasps that can develop even in subantarctic conditions. They lay eggs on arthropods.

Chalcids

Numerous detachment and the most valuable. They are used to kill pests in agriculture.

Evaniodes

Their structure is slightly different from ordinary wasps, the abdomen is slightly raised. They infect other wasps, cockroaches and sawflies.

Typhia

Parasites living in symbiosis with the victim. It can be May, dung beetles and other types of beetles.

Wasps riders and people

Wasp rider.

Wasps-riders and spiders.

Many are afraid of wasps and rightly so, especially those who have already met with a jagged sting. Some people are prone to allergies, so after Bites there is itching and swelling, in rare cases, anaphylactic shock.

Wasp riders inject some venom into their prey to temporarily render them harmless. In Russia, there are none of those that lay eggs under human skin. Therefore, the bite will be even less painful than even that of ordinary wasps.

But in any case, it is better not to run into. When walking, wear closed clothes so as not to get hurt. And when meeting with unfamiliar Hymenoptera, it is better to admire from afar.

Conclusion

Wasp riders are amazing creatures. They lay their eggs in other animals and thus spread their species. For people, they do not bear any harm, and some are even specially grown to destroy garden pests.
