The fringed or fringed spider is called for its peculiar coloring. Colors can vary from yellow-brown to brown-black, and along the sides there are longitudinal lines of light color, like a kind of border.
The spider has pronounced sexual dimorphism, females are almost twice as large as males and reach a length of 25 mm. These animals have long legs, with which it glides perfectly on the surface of the water and climbs trees or shrubs.
Hunting and food
Unusual hunting on the water made the process of catching small fish and shellfish easier. The spider builds a raft out of materials that float easily. These are leaves, straws, which are fastened with cobwebs.
On this artificial raft, the spider floats on the surface of the water and vigilantly looks out for prey. Then he grabs her, can even dive under the water and pulls her to land.
The hunter is fed by a rimmed hunter:
- small fish;
- shellfish;
- insects;
- tadpoles.
Reproduction and life cycle
The life span of a spider-hunter is 18 months. At the beginning of summer, the male is looking for a female, and while she is distracted by prey, she starts mating. If the man does not escape in time, it can also become a dinner.
The female weaves a cocoon near water bodies, in which she lays more than 1000 eggs. They stay in a cocoon for a month, and the female actively guards them.
Juveniles are pale, light green, often living in coastal thickets for the first time.
Habitat and distribution
The banded hunter spider is adapted to life on the ground, but prefers to stay closer to water bodies. The lifestyle of the spider is semi-aquatic, but it cannot stay in the water for a long time, unlike the silverfish spider. The animal is found in gardens, wet meadows, raised bogs. This type of spider is found:
- in Fennoscandia;
- on the plains of Russia;
- in the Urals;
- Kamchatka;
- in the Carpathians;
- in the Caucasus;
- in Central Siberia;
- mountains of Central Asia;
- in Ukraine.
The danger of the hunter spider
The banded hunter is a strong and active predator. He attacks his prey, grabs it and makes a fatal bite. The poison is dangerous to animals and insects.
The spider-hunter is not able to bite through the skin of an adult, so do not harm. But when approaching, the brave little arthropod takes a fighting pose, prepares for defense.
Economic importance
Like all representatives of spiders, the banded hunter prefers to eat small insects. It helps people cope with a large number of agricultural pests - aphids, midges, ants, beetles.
Conclusion
The bright and colorful spider-hunter often lives on the edges and near water bodies. It can be seen in the process of hunting, on the connected leaves the spider stands in the hunter's position, raising its front limbs. It does not harm people, it helps in pest control.
