Every year, more than two thousand people in the country become infected with encephalitis after being bitten by ticks. But it is known that not every tick is a carrier of a dangerous disease. But there are regions where the probability of becoming infected after a parasite bite is very high. It is especially important to know the distribution of ticks in Russia if you need to go to work or on a business trip, to the area where there are many cases of bites by infected parasites. It is possible to avoid infection with encephalitis, being in the regions where encephalitis ticks are spread, if you use protective equipment or get vaccinated in advance.

What is tick-borne viral encephalitis

The most dangerous viral infection transmitted through the bites of ixodid ticks, affecting the brain or spinal cord and can lead to disability and even death. Carriers of infection from a sick animal or person are ticks, in some cases people become infected by drinking unboiled milk of goats or cows with encephalitis.
The incubation period after a bite can last from a few days to two weeks. At the first stage of the disease, the following symptoms may appear: fever, intoxication, pain in the joints and muscles, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, lowering blood pressure, swollen lymph nodes, tachycardia, dizziness.
In the second stage, which occurs in 20-30% of those infected with encephalitis, the central nervous system is affected. In some cases, the disease becomes chronic, and at times there are periods of exacerbation. A person who has had encephalitis remains lifelong resistance to the disease and re-infection is impossible.

But in addition to encephalitis, with a tick bite, you can become infected with other dangerous diseases:

  • Q fever;
  • tick-borne borreliosis;
  • granulocytic anaplasmosis;
  • Siberian tick-borne typhus;
  • tularemia;
  • babesiosis.

Peak tick season

The duration of the tick season depends on the number of warm days. In the southern regions of the country, it begins in February-March, in areas where spring comes later, April-May, and this period usually lasts until the end of June. In autumn, the activity of ticks falls on September-October.

The most favorable air temperature for ticks is +20 degrees and humidity is 55-80%, during this period there is a massive appearance of parasites.

Where are encephalitis mites found?

Ticks live in the forest zone of the European and Asian parts of the country. Carriers of encephalitis are European forest and taiga ticks. They love well-moistened places in deciduous and mixed forests, covered with dense grass.

Parasites settle on the grass, next to the paths and paths along which people and animals move. Although ticks do not have eyes, they recognize their prey by smell, cling to clothing, crawl under it and dig into the skin.
