Currently, about 50 thousand species of ticks are known to science. They differ in appearance, type of food and lifestyle. The body color of most parasites of this species varies from shades of red to dark brown, but there are also white mites.

What ticks can be white

White tick is not a scientific definition of a subspecies of parasites, but the household name for a group of ticks, the color of which is lighter than the body color of most representatives of other species. Most often, representatives of the white color of the species described below are noted.

Ixodid ticks

Such ticks are considered the most dangerous for humans and animals, as they carry serious diseases: encephalitis and borreliosis. The shell or abdomen of some representatives of ixodid has a light shade, reminiscent of the color of peeled sunflower seeds.
There are also individuals with a white pattern on a dark surface - they are also conditionally referred to as white ticks. In addition to encephalitis and borreliosis, the ixodid spread and other dangerous viruses: hemorrhagic fever, typhus and relapsing fever.

All representatives of this species, including whites, can cause serious trouble in humans and animals. If a parasite is found on the body, it should be removed immediately.

If it is not possible to contact a medical institution, you will have to do it yourself. This must be done carefully, with twisting movements, so as not to crush the insect.

dust mites

Dust parasites live in houses and apartments, settle in accumulations of dust, most often on soft surfaces: upholstered furniture, toys, carpets, curtains and in places inaccessible for cleaning.

Dust mites do not bite warm-blooded animals and do not carry dangerous viruses, but nevertheless they cause a lot of problems to humans.

The products of their vital activity contain substances that are the strongest allergen for humans. As a result of their impact, the following negative reactions occur: lacrimation, conjunctivitis, cough and runny nose without a cold, skin rashes.

It is difficult to deal with these pests and it is impossible to get rid of them forever. However, their population can be reduced. To combat dust mites, special chemicals are used, as well as physical methods: freezing, exposure to high temperatures, and thorough cleaning of the room.

spider mites

Pests settle on garden, wild and domestic plants, feed on their juice. Spider mites are almost transparent therefore, they are not visible on the flowers and cobwebs that they weave in the course of their life.

Because of this, gardeners often do not understand what exactly is destroying their plants and carry out inappropriate treatment. Spider mites are able to destroy plants in a short time; to combat them, special acaricidal preparations are used, which are sold in gardening stores.

Ear mites

Most often, ear mites (or skin beetles) parasitize domestic animals. The shade of their body can vary from rich milky to transparent. Their size is usually 1-2 mm. Parasites are located in the external auditory canal or on the inner surface of the ear, causing the disease otodectosis or otodemodekoz.
The disease is accompanied by severe itching, the appearance of copious discharge from the ear canal, if left untreated, the lesions are more severe, the infection penetrates deeper, the animal gradually loses its vitality. Infection with parasites is diagnosed in the laboratory, treatment is long, but usually effective.

Scabies Ticks

Representatives of this type are the causative agent of scabies. The disease is dangerous for animals and humans, accompanied by severe itching, irritation of the skin, due to scratching, a secondary infection often joins. Scabies mites are white but cannot be seen with the naked eye due to their microscopic size.

flour mites

Flour pests parasitize food products and make them unfit for consumption. The shade of their body can be both almost transparent and yellowish-white. The size of the parasite is not more than a millimeter. Most often, representatives of this species settle in flour, cereals, dried fruits, herbal preparations and dairy products, such as cheese.

Is the big white tick dangerous?

Of all the listed varieties of white pests, the largest are representatives of ixodid, all others are microscopic in size. Therefore, if you find a large white tick on the body of a person or animal, you must immediately remove it.
As mentioned above, ixodid ticks carry dangerous diseases, which can cause severe neurological damage and even death. What kind of diseases the Ixodes carry depends on the area in which they live.

Contrary to popular belief, encephalitis occurs in almost all regions of Russia, and not only in Siberia and the Far East. Hemorrhagic fever is common in the south of the country. Of course, not all insects are infected with dangerous viruses, but the percentage of those infected is quite large.

Which ticks from harmless to humans most often acquire a white tint

The definition of "non-dangerous tick" means an insect that does not directly harm human health. Among the non-dangerous pests that have white color:

Ear mite

It can live on the body of cats, dogs, small domestic animals (for example, guinea pigs), but does not parasitize on humans.

spider mite

It does not affect the human body in any way (it does not feed on its blood and does not cause allergic reactions), but it can cause problems by destroying crops and garden plantings.

flour mite

It has an indirect effect on people, spoiling their food. It can cause an allergic reaction, but its symptoms will be mild due to the low dose of the allergen.

How to Remove a White Tick from a Dog Quickly and Gently

Some owners, at the sight of a parasite attached to the body of their pet, panic and try to tear it off with force. This cannot be done for the following reasons:

  1. The head of the tick may remain in the wound, which will cause inflammation and a purulent abscess. If the dog is weakened, then this can cause more serious forms of purulent inflammation.
  2. Dangerous viruses are contained in the saliva of the parasite. If removed incorrectly, the head of the tick remains in the body of the victim for a long time, which greatly increases the risk of infection.

How to pull out a white tick completely

To extract the pest, it is advisable to contact the nearest medical facility. If this is not possible, you need to remove the tick yourself. Action algorithm:

  • prepare a container for the parasite in advance: a test tube or other container with a tight lid;
  • put on rubber medical gloves;
  • prepare an antiseptic, tweezers (preferably a special one from a pharmacy, but a regular one will do);
  • capture the insect as close to the bite as possible;
  • scroll the tick in any direction 2-3 times;
  • place the extracted parasite in a prepared container;
  • disinfect the bite site.

What to do if the head comes off

You can try to remove part of the tick with a needle, like removing a splinter. If it was not possible, carefully treat the bite site with iodine and observe the wound for several days. Most likely, after a few days the body itself will reject the foreign body. If a visible swelling, suppuration has formed at the site of the bite, it is urgent to contact a veterinarian.

Where to take a white tick for analysis and how long to wait for the results

You can take a tick for analysis at the city center for hygiene and epidemiology, as well as commercial laboratories with a special license. The results of the analysis will have to wait 1-3 days. If viruses are found in the tick's body, you should promptly consult a doctor for emergency prophylaxis.

How to get rid of pests

Currently, there are many effective methods of dealing with various pests, including ticks.

Insecticides and acaricides for pest control

The action of insecticidal preparations is directed against all types of parasitic insects, acaricides act on arachnids, which include ticks. When choosing a remedy, it is necessary to take into account the type of parasite, where and for whom the drug will be used.
So, there are special products for the treatment of garden and domestic plants in the form of concentrates, special drops and tablets for the treatment of pets, sprays and aerosols to combat house dust mites.

Measures for the prevention of purchased seedlings and adult plants

The main task of the grower is the constant monitoring of plants, the only way to notice pest infestation in time. The main preventive measures include:

  • all new plants should get to others only after quarantine measures in 2-4 weeks;
  • glasses or a magnifying glass should be used to examine for the appearance of parasites (mites are microscopic in size, but with a small increase they look like small moving grains);
  • all infected areas of the plant must be removed immediately;
  • it is important to monitor the microclimate: conditions of high temperature and low humidity are most favorable for ticks.

Myths about white ticks

Among the inhabitants of our country, there are widespread misconceptions that white ticks are some kind of mutants, albino insects, and they are extremely dangerous for humans. In fact, white individuals are no scarier than their counterparts of the same species of a different shade.

In addition, some insects may turn white after the next molt, after passing through this stage, their natural color returns.

In a separate group, insects can be distinguished that have lived for generations in dark caves and grottoes, without access to sunlight.

They are indeed completely devoid of pigmentation, however, such individuals are not found in the forest park zones of the middle lane.
