The pest got its name by no means because of its resemblance to a fragrant, ripe berry. This is the name of a whole group of insects that parasitize on berry bushes, including raspberry bushes. A bug that has settled in raspberries spoils the fruits: they become disgusting in taste, and with a massive infection, the plant may die.

What does a raspberry bug look like

The raspberry bug is the popular name for the shield bug, which is found throughout Russia. There are several thousand varieties of stink bugs, but raspberries are most often inhabited by the so-called stink bugs or green bugs.
The length of the body of the pest does not exceed 15 mm., The shape of the body is oval, slightly flattened. The body is protected by a shell and covered with small villi. Wings and whiskers are yellowish-brown. The main color of the insect tends to change depending on the season: in summer it is green, and with the advent of autumn it changes to brown and brown.
Thus, the camouflage abilities of the pest are manifested, which ensures its reliable protection from birds. Another property that the bug uses for protection is the release of an odorous secret. If you accidentally touch or crush an insect, you will hear a sharp, unpleasant odor. It is impossible to eat a berry on which a bug has sat - it is difficult to kill a disgusting taste with anything.

Where do bed bugs come from in the garden?

The main reason for the appearance of pests is plant debris in the garden. Bedbugs live for 2 years, they hide in shelters for the winter, and old leaves and shoots are perfect for this. With the advent of spring, when the air warms up to a temperature of +15 degrees, they get out of their homes and begin to look for a source of food.
The second reason is the smell of fragrant fruits and plants. Bedbugs have a fairly developed sense of smell and are able to catch an attractive aroma from a long distance. Some time after feeding, they lay their eggs on the inside of the leaf. Further, larvae appear, which actively devour foliage and shoots.

In addition, pests can be on the site if there are forests and fields where wild berry bushes grow nearby.

What harm do bedbugs do to raspberries?

Although parasites are often found on berries, they do not feed on the fruits themselves. Their diet is the juice of shoots and leaves of plants.

The harm that "stinkers" cause to garden plants:

  • they feed on the juice of the plant, taking away its vitality, as a result of which the bush withers and dries up;
  • leave holes in the shoots and leaves in the form of gnaws through which bacteria and fungi penetrate into the plant;
  • leave traces of their odorous secretions on the fruits, as a result of which the berries become unsuitable for food due to a disgusting smell and unpleasant aftertaste, in addition, damaged berries are susceptible to fungal infections.

The survivability of parasites and their uncontrolled reproduction is also due to the fact that, due to an unpleasant odor, they are not touched by other insects and birds.

Is it possible to get rid of the unpleasant smell on the berries

Unfortunately, it is completely impossible to get rid of the fetid smell of the secret. Some gardeners recommend soaking the berries, but this does not give a 100% result.

Methods for dealing with raspberry bugs in the garden

It is almost impossible to see a small green insect in green foliage, and it is even more difficult to see laid eggs. Therefore, most often the fight has to begin when the defeat of berry bushes by bugs becomes already obvious. To destroy berry bugs, chemical compounds, agricultural practices and folk recipes are used.

Chemicals

There are no special insecticidal preparations to combat raspberry bugs. For their extermination, broad-spectrum compounds are used, which are sold in specialized stores. Such funds show high efficiency and, subject to the rules of use, do not harm humans and animals.

Biological preparations

Biological preparations are safer for humans. Their effectiveness is somewhat lower than that of insecticides, so treatment will need to be carried out more often to exterminate pests.

Folk remedies

Folk remedies do not have a pronounced effectiveness, but they are absolutely safe for humans and with their regular use, some effect can be achieved. The principle of operation of most products is based on insect intolerance to pungent odors.

MustardDissolve dry mustard powder in preheated water. The proportions depend on the degree of distribution of pests: if there are not many of them, then by 10 liters. water will be enough 100 gr. mustard. If the lesion is massive, then the concentration should be increased. Allow the composition to cool, after which you can start processing. Particular attention should be paid to the front and back of the sheets.
Lukovaâ HuskFill any volumetric container halfway with the main component and pour cold water over it. Insist the composition in a dark place for 4-5 days, the liquid should acquire a brownish tint. After that, it must be filtered and diluted with water in a ratio of 1/4. Use the composition for regular spraying of bushes, it is permissible to store it for 2 months.

Agrotechnical methods

Most often, agricultural practices are aimed more at preventing the appearance of bedbugs than at fighting them.

  1. When planting, it is necessary to plant young plants separately and avoid excessive planting density.
  2. Also, as mentioned above, it is recommended to get rid of all plant debris in a timely manner, as they serve as a refuge for young individuals.
  3. It should be noted that these methods will be useless if the insects have already flooded the garden and are actively parasitizing shrubs.

Prevention of the appearance of bedbugs on raspberries

In addition to plant residues, bugs choose the upper layers of soil for wintering. If, after harvesting, before wintering, carefully dig the soil, then most of the larvae will freeze in winter and, most likely, will not disturb the gardener for the next season.

During the season, it is recommended to regularly inspect the bushes for the appearance of parasites on them - this will allow you to detect bedbugs in a timely manner and avoid the use of chemical compounds. If a bug is seen on a plant, it must be immediately destroyed and the entire shrub should be inspected.
