How many babies do mice give birth to at the same time?

Most people know that the mouse population is growing rapidly. If you see one mouse, there's a good chance there are more nearby.

Not only can mice give birth to multiple babies at once, they can also have multiple litters each year. Female house mice can have up to six pups every three weeks and can give birth to their second litter as early as 25 days after the first. They can give birth to about 35 babies in a year. On average, humans only have one baby per year and only two in a lifetime, so that's a lot of mice compared to humans!

Mice are born without hair, ears, or the ability to see. Because of this, mothers nurse their babies for 21 days. By the fourth day their ears are fully developed, by the tenth day they have full fur, and by the fourteenth day they open their eyes for the first time. After 21 days of nursing, the puppies are weaned and leave their mothers. At two months of age, female mice are fully mature and can begin giving birth to their own young.

When mice grow up, they will begin to look for food. Despite their small size, mice eat 15 to 20 times a day. Although house mice primarily eat plant foods, they also eat meat and dairy products they find around the house. Sometimes they even eat their own droppings to get nutrients produced by the bacteria in their intestines!

Living indoors, mice can breed year-round, but outdoor breeding occurs in the spring, summer, and fall. Winter becomes too cold for mice to breed outdoors. Mice also live longer if they live indoors. In the wild they can live up to 12 months, but indoors they can live up to two years. During the fall and winter, mice move indoors seeking shelter from cool temperatures and in search of food. These may be great places for mice to have babies - but not so great for the people living there!
