The hare is native to Europe (except for the Iberian Peninsula and northern Scandinavia); it is also found in Asia as far as Iran and Iraq. The hare population currently amounts to 0,5 million individuals and is systematically declining.

There are two types of hares in Poland.

One of them is the mountain hare (Lepus europaeus), the other is the white-tailed hare (Lepus timidus). The whitetail is very rare in Poland and is found only in the northeastern region. The gray deer loves open spaces (meadows), the white-tailed deer feels better in large forests. The white-tailed hare is a strictly protected species.

Unlike the rabbit, the hare does not dig holes.

Its lair is a shallow depression in the ground with trampled grass.

Females are larger than males.

Hares are solitary animals.

Only sometimes, especially in winter, do they gather in large groups.

Their breeding season lasts from the second half of March to August. Females give birth to 3-4 babies per litter 2-5 times a year.

During the mating season, fights often occur between females.

In this way, females show assertive males that they are not interested in them: during a fight, females stand on their hind legs and fight with their front legs. It's called boxing.

The natural enemies of hares are: foxes, buzzards, hooded crows, dogs, wolves, martens, ferrets, eagle owls, and hawks.

Hares can move without running at a speed of 64 km/ha and jump to a height of up to 3 m.

The lifespan of hares is approximately 12 – 13 years.

However, due to threats from predators, this age rarely exceeds 5 years.

Hares are nocturnal animals.

They move and feed at night, and most often sleep during the day.
